8D drum and bass you can see: a ragga jungle sound system on every side of you, and a ring on screen that shows where each sound sits around your head.
Stereo headphones or earbuds only, with Spatial Audio, Spatialize Stereo, 360 Audio or Dolby Atmos switched off, because the 8D is already in the track.
Twelve tracks, 50 minutes. This is my Ragga Jungle playlist from 18 September reworked, not repeated: a new running order, a new picture, and three tracks that have never been released anywhere, Speakers Facing Out, Aerial On The Railing and Rain On Hot Tarmac. The other nine come back from the original, each one given its own 8D treatment. The theme is Speakers Facing Out: stand in the middle of a rig and the sound is never just in front of you, it is all around you.
HOW THE 8D WAS MADE
8D audio usually means one stereo track swung left and right. This one is built the long way. Every track is split into its parts, the MC, the break, the bass and the stabs, and each part is placed and moved around your head with a binaural renderer built for the channel. The sub-bass and the kick stay dead centre, so the weight never wobbles. When a drop lands, the movement freezes for one bar, then the rig moves again. The picture is drawn from the same motion data as the sound, so the lights are the sound.
THE RING
Ember diamond: the MC. Green triangle: the stabs. Pink dots: the break. Blue moon: the bass. Behind it, the jungle scenes, darkened so you can follow where everything is.
HOW TO LISTEN
Built for headphones. Every sound has a place around your head, and the ring shows you where.
Using AirPods, Galaxy Buds or similar? Switch off Spatial Audio or 360 Audio for this one. It is already done, and a second layer smears it.
On speakers or a TV it plays as a wide stereo playlist. Still heavy, just not round your head.
Running outside? Keep an ear on the road. This one shines on a treadmill or a loop you know is safe. It is not one for race day: licensed road races in the UK ban in-ear and open-ear buds.
