This temple was excavated by the sixth king of the Rashtrakuta dynasty, Amoghavarsha I (814 - 878 AD) in the form of a fortress during his time around the 8th century AD. During the Rashtra Kutas, Pune was famous as Punyavishay or Poonkavishay (Vishay means district). These names are found in a copper plate issued during the reign of the Rashtrakuta king Krishna (I). Pataleshwar cave has been built by excavating the ground below the ground. There are similarities between the Rashtrakuta period caves in Pataleswar and Verul. They must be caves of the same tradition. Patalshwar Cave has a large courtyard. In the center of the courtyard is a circular Nandi Mandapam. The roof of this Nandimandapa is huge, thick and circular. This shaft is covered with pillars. Within it is another circle, on which is a Nandi placed at a later date. Upon entering the cave there are rows of square columns. There are three sanctum sanctorums in front. In the middle sanctum sanctorum is the Shiv Linga. On its dvarashakas, i.e. near the door of the sanctum sanctorum, there is an engraving. Here is the circular path. The back part of the sanctum is smaller than the front part. Adjacent to the back wall, the woodwork is found to be completed in some areas. The work in one area is incomplete. Then you can see how the cavers are digging, moving forward. The sculptures visible on the left and right hand walls of the sanctum sanctorum are completely damaged, or their work remains inadequate. One of the sculptures is of Shiva and one of Tripurasura Vadha. There is an illegible inscription on the outer wall of the cave. पाताळेश्वर लेणी ( शिवालय ) माहिती - पाताळेश्वर हे महाराष्ट्राच्या पुणे शहरातल्या शिवाजीनगर भागात वसलेले एक शिवालय आहे. हे शिवालय राष्ट्रकूट राजवटीचा सहावा राजा पहिला अमोघवर्ष (इ.स ८१४ - ८७८) याने त्याच्या काळात इ.स.च्या ८ व्या शतकाच्या सुमारास लेण्याच्या स्वरूपात खोदून घडवले आहे. राष्ट्र कुटांच्या काळात पुणे हे पुण्यविषय किंवा पूनकविषय (विषय म्हणजे जिल्हा) म्हणून प्रसिद्ध होते. राष्ट्रकूट राजा कृष्ण (पहिला) याच्या कारकिर्दीत दिलेल्या ताम्रपटात ही नावे आढळतात. पाताळेश्वर हे लेणे जमिनीव्या खाली जमीन खोदून बांधण्यात आले आहे. पाताळेश्वर आणि वेरूळमधील राष्ट्रकूट कालखंडातील लेणी यांत साम्य आढळते. त्या एकाच परंपरेतील ही लेणी असावीत. पाताळश्वर लेण्याला मोठे प्रांगण आहे. प्रांगणाच्या मध्यभागी वर्तुळाकार नंदीमंडप आहे. या नंदीमंडपाचे छत प्रचंड मोठे, जाड व वर्तुळाकार कातळाचे आहे. हा कातळ स्तंभांनी पेलला आहे. त्याच्याआत आणखी एक वर्तुळ आहे, त्यावर नंतरच्या काळात ठेवण्यात आलेला एक नंदी आहे. लेण्यात प्रवेश केल्यावर चौकोनी स्तंभांच्या रांगा आहेत. समोर तीन गर्भगृहे आहेत. मधल्या गर्भगृहात शिवलिंग आहे. त्याच्या द्वारशाखांवर, म्हणजे गर्भगृहाच्या दरवाज्याजवळ नक्षी कोरली आहे. येथे प्रदक्षिणा मार्ग आहे. गर्भगृहामागील भाग हा पुढील भागापेक्षा लहान आहे. मागच्या भिंतीला लागून काही भागांत कट्ट्याचे काम पूर्ण झालेले आढळते. एका भागातील काम अर्धवट आहे.तेव्हा लेणी खशी खोदत असतील, पुढे कसे जात असतील ते लक्षात येते. गर्भगृहाव्या डाव्या आणि उजव्या हाताच्या भिंतींवर जी शिल्पे दिसतात ती पूर्णपणे खराब झाली आहेत, किंवा त्यांचे काम अपुरे राहिले आहे. त्या शिल्पांतील एक लिंगोद्भव शिवाचे आणि एक त्रिपुरासुर वधाचे आहे. लेण्याच्या बाहेरील भिंतीवर एक झिजल्यामुळे न वाचता येणारा शिलालेख आहे.
