The basic principle of the Meter Bridge is based on the Wheatstone Bridge. When the bridge is balanced, no current flows through the galvanometer. At this condition, the ratio of resistances is equal to the ratio of lengths of the resistance wire on both sides of the null point.
The formula generally used in the Meter Bridge is:
X / R = l / (100 – l)
Where: X = Unknown Resistance R = Known Resistance l = Balancing Length from one end of the wire
By using this relationship, we can calculate the unknown resistance easily. Students should understand the concept behind the formula instead of only memorizing it. Once the Wheatstone Bridge principle is clear, the Meter Bridge becomes a very easy and scoring topic.
