The Honey Thief | Teachings of Selected Gurus

You work hard for your wealth. But who will ultimately enjoy it? In this part of the Teachings of Selected Gurus seminar from the 11th Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, we learn from the **honey thief**—a powerful teacher of the futility of excessive attachment to wealth and possessions. Bees work tirelessly to collect honey, but eventually someone else comes and takes what they have accumulated. The honey thief may eat it, sell it, or use it for his own purposes. The bees' enormous effort does not guarantee that they will ever enjoy the fruit of their labor. The same can happen to a person who spends his entire life accumulating wealth. He works, saves, protects, invests, and worries about his possessions—only to discover that someone else may eventually take what he struggled so hard to acquire. This raises an uncomfortable question: *If everything we accumulate can ultimately be taken from us, what should we actually be working for?* In this lecture Bhagavata Dharma Das (also written Bhagavata-dharma dasa, Bhagavat Dharma, Bhagavad Dharma, Bhagavad Dharma Das) explores: • the danger of excessive attachment to wealth • why accumulation can become a form of bondage • the difference between possessing wealth and using it properly • why material security can never be guaranteed • how greed and attachment create anxiety • what happens when the fruits of our labor become the purpose of our life • why wealth can become spiritually valuable when used in Kṛṣṇa's service • the responsibility of householders to use their resources for a higher purpose The lesson is not that wealth itself is bad. Wealth becomes meaningful when it is used for a higher purpose rather than accumulated simply for personal enjoyment. A devotee may possess great resources, but he understands that they ultimately belong to Kṛṣṇa.
