Arturia MiniFreak 49 is a world-first reveal today, and Future Music is one of the very few media to have received a launch unit for a written review on our website and for this Music Demo.
Every musical fragment was played by Jalvac in FutureMusic media[LAB], and the aim is simple: To show the wide range of patches on board MiniFreak 49, from familiar sounds to textures you will not hear coming.
Many of them have a strongly cinematic character, with the tension, space and slow-moving motion that suit film scoring, trailer music, ambient, electronica and sound design.

🎬 Highlights

The NEW Arturia MiniFreak 49 is a spontaneous algorithmic synthesizer that puts the Freak sound under 49 full-size, semi-weighted keys with velocity and mono aftertouch.
Its sound comes from two digital engines offering more than 30 oscillator modes, covering virtual analog, FM, wavetable, granular, sample-based and physical modeling synthesis.
Engine 2 can even process Engine 1, and each of the six voices of MiniFreak 49 then runs through its own polyphonic analog state-variable filter, switchable between low-pass, band-pass and high-pass and able to self-oscillate.
That is why even the strangest digital textures arrive with real weight behind them. Audio-rate Filter FM drives the analog filters from smooth to feral, which gives the dark drones, gritty basses and aggressive leads in this demo their edge.
The biggest new idea with MiniFreak 49 is the XYZ touch matrix. You slide across it and press into it, so a single touch moves several parameters at once, with pressure acting as a third dimension. It handles performance, modulation assignment, preset browsing and visual feedback on one surface.
Freak Control adds macros, Gate and Spice, Time Stretch, Filter Freak and Timbre Shape layouts, plus FX Mix to balance the effects live. Many of the evolving pads and cinematic swells you hear come from that kind of hands-on movement. Voice Panning with selectable stereo spread algorithms makes basses and pads sound huge, while deep modulation, with two LFOs per voice that you can even draw on the touch matrix, means a patch never quite sits still.
Three digital effect slots, each with 13 algorithms including a self and external-input vocoder, colour, disrupt or refine the sound as needed.
For playing and arranging ideas with MiniFreak 49, there is a 64-step sequencer with four lanes of automated modulation and a performance arpeggiator with octave jumps, ratchets, repeats and Spice and Dice.
The synth also has aluminum pitch and modulation wheels, a larger OLED display, 256MB of memory for your own samples and wavetables, 350 factory presets and 162 user slots.
Arturia MiniFreak 49 it is compatible with original MiniFreak presets, and the MiniFreak V plugin carries everything into your DAW when it is time to finish the track. Connectivity includes MIDI In, Out and Thru, USB-C, audio in, sustain, clock in and out, and stereo outputs.
Since 2019 the Freak range has followed a clear philosophy: Edgy digital oscillators through analog filters, on instruments that make experimenting feel like playing rather than programming.
The NEW MiniFreak 49 is the newest chapter in that story, and the range keeps growing through free firmware updates. We hope this demo gives you a real sense of how far the machine can travel, from the recognisable to the cinematic and the downright unexpected.
