Erdene Zuu Monastery is the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, founded in 1586 near the ancient capital of Kharkhorin using stones from the ruins of Karakorum. Once home to hundreds of temples and thousands of monks, much of the monastery was destroyed during the communist purges of the 1930s, but several temples were later restored. Today, Erdene Zuu remains an active monastery and one of Mongolia's most important cultural and spiritual landmarks, attracting visitors from around the world.
