We enter the Alpha Centauri system — three stars moving around each other, the binary pair of Alpha Centauri A and B blazing together, and the faint red ember of Proxima Centauri waiting in the distance. We approach Proxima b, the planet in the habitable zone of the nearest star, descend through whatever atmosphere it holds, and touch down on a surface no human has ever seen, beneath a sky dominated by a red sun larger and closer than ours. You'll discover that the light leaving Alpha Centauri right now will reach Earth in 4.37 years, meaning everything we see of it tonight is already years old by the time it arrives. That the interstellar void between here and Alpha Centauri is not empty in the way a room is empty — it contains a few hydrogen atoms per cubic centimeter, faint magnetic fields, and the occasional dust grain travelling at thousands of kilometers per second. That Proxima Centauri b orbits its star in just 11 days, completing a full year in the time it takes Earth to travel from January to the middle of the month. That Proxima Centauri itself is so faint it cannot be seen with the naked eye from Earth despite being our nearest stellar neighbor.
