This week, I'm talking about how I perceive depth, even though I don't have any depth perception. I don't see depth in the way that most people do. Because my eyes don't work properly, I see everything as though it's a photograph or a movie on a screen at best, and like cartoon animation at worst. Over the years, I've learned some tricks to help me interpret depth to make functioning in the world easier. Firstly, I rely heavily on the relative size of objects to help me decide how far away something is. The smaller it is compared to what I think its actual size should be, the farther away I interpret that object to be. I use differences in the value of an object's colors to help me decide if it is three dimensional or flat. However, I also find it difficult to see the subtle changes caused by shadows, so much of the natural world still looks very flat to me. Finally, I rely on patterns and shapes made by different objects with different textures to tell me if what I am looking at is simply a pretty pattern on the floor, or if it is a set of stairs that I need to be aware of.
Thank you to my mother, Susan Hall, for taking the photo that I used for the thumbnail of this video!
