The back door has stuck since the end of June. Gus discovers that if he leans on it, it groans like a cow with a problem, and he does it forty times a day. Avery wants it fixed today, with a tool. Dad hands her a pencil and a piece of paper instead. Every Sunday she measures the gap at the top and the gap at the side, and writes it on a chart taped to the back of the door. Her theory is heat - hot day, big door. Then the hottest day of the year comes and the door doesn't stick at all, and Avery stops filling in the chart. What children find out: wood drinks the air.
