Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Taito Publisher: Taito Year of Release: 1983 Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- Simplicity is often the best recipe for success, and I reckon this applies to Elevator Action. This espionage-themed shoot 'em up doesn't try to overcomplicate things, and is so much the better for it. Zip-lining on to the roof a high-rise building, you assume control of a secret agent type of character who must make their way from the top of the building to the ground floor using, as the title implies, elevators that move between the floors on a timer. Each floor of the building contains a series of doors from which black-hat agents will emerge. This cloak-and-dagger security force will not stop in their endeavours to stop you, alive or dead. The rooms behind the red doors contain briefcases of documents you can acquire, netting you bonus points, making for a game of risk-versus-reward. Fortunately, your agent came prepared for just such an occasion. Packing a firearm, bad guys can be shot for points, clearing the way forward. It's worth noting that anyone falling into a lift shaft, or getting caught underneath an elevator as it descends will get pancakes, with a suitably amusing animation. The core game loop doesn't change over the course of the four or so buildings. They just get harder. You'll need quick reactions and the ability to plan ahead if you intend to make it out alive. It's a surprisingly fun game, one with a memorable visual style. Despite its age, Elevator Action is still a game worth playing.
