Nowadays in the state of ruins, this monument is the subject of a classification as historical monuments by order of theDecember 27, 1996. In the Middle Ages, the castle was the main center of the seigniory of Freinet, occupying a territory corresponding to the current cantons of Grimaud and Saint-Tropez. From the 11th century , there is mention of a castrum in Grimaud, dominating the plain from the top of a rocky peak, naturally protected to the north by the steep slopes of the Vallon de la Garde. Until the 13th century , the fortifications were modest. The castle is inhabited by the family of the Viscounts of Marseille . In the 14th century , the village rampart joined the seigniorial fortifications. In the fifteenth century, a first quadrangular building, built to the south of the keep, comes to enlarge the whole. The blind room at the base of the dungeon is transformed into a cistern. In the middle of the 17th century, the powerful Castellane family extended the buildings by adding the two round towers and developing the east wing on three levels. Jean-Baptiste de Castellane is the last occupant of the premises. During the French Revolution , the castle was abandoned and the stones sold at auction. The whole of the enclosure and the fortifications are classified as Historic Monuments in 1996 while the basement is an archaeological site. An outdoor theater has been set up, allowing the municipality to organize summer events. Le château de Grimaud est une forteresse médiévale datant d'au moins le xie siècle située sur la commune de Grimaud, dans le département français du Var. De nos jours à l'état de ruines, ce monument fait l'objet d'un classement au titre des monuments historiques par arrêté du 27 décembre 1996. Au Moyen Age, le château était le centre principal de la seigneurie du Freinet, occupant un territoire correspondant aux cantons actuels de Grimaud et de Saint-Tropez. Dès le xie siècle, on trouve mention d'un castrum à Grimaud, dominant la plaine du sommet d'un piton rocheux, protégé naturellement au Nord par les fortes pentes du vallon de la Garde. Jusqu'au xiiie siècle, les fortifications sont modestes. Le château est habité par la famille des vicomtes de Marseille. Au xive siècle, le rempart du village vient rejoindre les fortifications seigneuriales. Au xve siècle, un premier bâtiment quadrangulaire, construit au sud du donjon, vient agrandir l'ensemble. La pièce aveugle à la base du donjon est transformée en citerne. Au milieu du xviie siècle, la puissante famille de Castellane agrandit les bâtiments en ajoutant les deux tours rondes et en développant l'aile Est sur trois niveaux. Jean-Baptiste de Castellane est le dernier occupant des lieux. Durant la Révolution française, le château est abandonné et les pierres vendues aux enchères. L'ensemble de l'enceinte et des fortifications sont classées au titre des Monuments historiques en 1996 tandis que le sous-sol est un site archéologique.
