Johann "Jack" Unterweger (16 August 1950 – 29 June 1994) was an Austrian serial killer, often referred to as the "Vienna Woods Killer" or the "Poet of Death." He is one of the most notorious examples of a criminal who manipulated the justice system and public perception through his writing talent. Early Life and First Crimes Born in Judenburg, Styria, Austria, to a single mother (Theresia Unterweger, who worked as a barmaid/waitress and was sometimes described as a prostitute), Unterweger never knew his father — reportedly an American soldier. His childhood was troubled: abandoned early by his mother (who was imprisoned for fraud), he was raised partly by a violent, alcoholic grandfather. This background fueled a deep-seated hatred toward sex workers. By his teens, Unterweger had a criminal record involving assaults on prostitutes. In 1974, he committed his first known murder: the strangling of 18-year-old Margret Schäfer (using her own bra strap — a signature method he would repeat). He was convicted in 1976 and sentenced to life in prison. Prison Years and "Rehabilitation" While incarcerated, Unterweger transformed himself into a writer. He authored poems, short stories, plays, and an autobiography titled Fegefeuer oder die Reise ins Zuchthaus ("Purgatory or The Journey to Prison"). His works gained critical acclaim in Austria's literary circles, earning him the nickname "Jack the Writer" (a dark play on Jack the Ripper). Many intellectuals, including prominent figures, campaigned for his release, viewing him as a success story of rehabilitation. Despite opposition from some authorities, he was paroled in 1990 after serving about 15 years — hailed as a reformed man and minor celebrity. Post-Release Killing Spree Tragically, Unterweger quickly resumed his crimes. Starting in late 1990, he murdered at least nine more women (mostly sex workers) in Austria, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic), and the United States. His signature method involved strangling victims with their own bras or lingerie, often leaving bodies in wooded areas. In a chilling twist, he worked as a journalist covering some of the murders he himself committed — even reporting on the "Vienna Woods killings" for Austrian media. In 1991, while on assignment in Los Angeles (comparing red-light districts), he killed three prostitutes there. Capture, Trial, and Death As evidence mounted (including fibers from his clothing, alibis that didn't hold, and links to crime scenes across countries), Austrian police pursued him. Unterweger fled to the U.S. but was arrested in Miami, Florida, in February 1992. Extradited to Austria, he faced trial in 1994 for nine murders (the court did not retry the original 1974 case). Despite his charm and denials, he was convicted on all counts. Hours after the verdict, on June 29, 1994, Unterweger hanged himself in his cell using the drawstring from his prison jumpsuit — ironically using a similar knot to those on his victims. Legacy Unterweger's case shocked Austria and highlighted the dangers of premature release and celebrity-driven rehabilitation.
