Under the leadership of Abellou Yattara, the band is one of the main representatives of the typical Tamasheq music style called tashigalt. This music consists of a continuous interplay between the three-stringed tehardent and the rhythm of the percussion on the calabash. The name of the group is derived from Bilal ibn Rabah, born in Mecca in 580. Bilal, a contemporary of the Prophet Muhammad, was a former slave known for his voice, which he used to call people to prayer. Muhammad chose Bilal as the first Mu'azzin. The story of Bilal is the most cited example of the Islamic principle of not judging people based on their nationality, social status, or race, but on their piety. One of Bilal's descendants is said to have migrated to West Africa. The region in West Africa south of the Sahara was called Soudan by the Arabs centuries ago, meaning 'land of the black people.' The name of the group is thus a tribute to their Muslim heritage, their slave ancestry, and the historical name of the West African desert.
