Tranquebar | The Danish Fort, the Sea & a 400-Year Story
On India's Coromandel Coast lies a quiet little town with two names - Tharangambadi and Tranquebar.
Our journey to this remarkable coastal town was on two wheels, riding a TVS Jupiter 125 from Bengaluru through Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Chidambaram.
But Tranquebar's story goes back more than 400 years.
In 1620, Danish Admiral Ove Giedde arrived on the Tamil coast after a failed attempt to establish a Danish presence in Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka). An agreement with Raghunatha Nayak of Thanjavur allowed the Danes to establish a trading settlement here.
At its heart stood Fort Dansborg - built in 1620 and destined to become the centre of Danish activity in India.
From these walls, textiles, pepper and other goods entered the Indian Ocean trade. Later, Tranquebar became an important centre of Protestant missionary activity, with Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau arriving here in 1706, followed by schools, printing and Tamil publications.
The Danish presence lasted for more than two centuries before Tranquebar was sold to Britain in 1845.
But there is another character in this story — the sea.
The same sea that brought ships, merchants and ideas to Tranquebar has also reshaped its shoreline and claimed parts of its older landscape.
Come along as we ride through the quiet streets of Tharangambadi, explore Fort Dansborg, walk through its old rooms and courtyards, and look at a fascinating chapter of India's coastal history.
The fort remains.
The ships are gone.
But the waves are still singing.
Tharangambadi.
