50th Anniversay Haile Selassie High School 2016 Founders Day

Haile Selassie High School Welcomes H.I.H. Prince Ermias: This historical clip features highlights of the April 2016 Civic Reception at the Haile Selassie High School in Jamaica for Ethiopian Prince, Ermias Sahle Selassie. Prince Ermias and his wife Princess Saba Kebede were the special guests of honor during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Emperor Haile Selassie I’s 1966 State Visit to Jamaica. While on the island the Ethiopian Emperor donated the money to build the school and laid the foundation stone. The Ethiopian royal couple visited the High School in Southwest St. Andrew on Day Two of their ten-day 2016 tour of Jamaica. Speakers at the public function included H.I.H. Prince Ermias, school principal Lorenzo Ellis, former Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for the area Portia Simpson-Miller, former school Headmistress Claney Barnett, Rootz Foundation Vice President I. Jabulani Tafari, and Ethiopian Orthodox Church representative Ketise Oyonde. Entertainers for the 2016 Founder’s Day event at the Haile Selassie High School included Mikey General, the Mau Mau Warriors, Warrior King and Bongo Herman. Also performing were the Haile Selassie High School choir, the High School Dance Troupe, and Ras Ivi and the Nyahbinghi drummers and chanters. During the spirited program Prince Ermias was presented with the ceremonial Key to the City of Kingston by then Mayor Angela Brown-Burke. University of the West Indies professor Dr. Michael Barnett was the Master of Ceremonies for the Haile Selassie High School Founder’s Day anniversary civic event.
