Jack Torrance was already abusive long before the Overlook.
In this video, I’m looking at Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and the 1997 Stephen King miniseries, and how both versions show Jack Torrance as an abusive husband and father. Kubrick’s Jack barely acts like he loves Wendy and Danny at all, while Steven Weber’s Jack can still seem remorseful, wounded, and like he wants to change.
This is about what each adaptation shows us about Jack before the hotel fully takes over.
Content note: this video discusses domestic abuse, emotional abuse, alcoholism, and family trauma through The Shining.
