Hosanna means: “Save us, O Lord.” But what do we really need Jesus to save us from? In Mark 11:10–15, Fr. Paul Baky reflects on the deeper meaning of Hosanna. We often ask God to save us from problems, difficult people, pressure, disappointment, or circumstances. But the greater prayer is: “Lord, save me from my sins. Save me from my pride. Save me from temptation. Save me from myself.” As Jesus enters Jerusalem and then the temple, He looks around at everything. This Bible study reminds us that the Lord is also looking deeply at our hearts—our attention, our desires, our sincerity, and whether we are truly seeking Him. The fig tree gives us another serious lesson: it had leaves, but no fruit. The problem was not weakness. The problem was appearance without depth—the outward form of faith while the heart remained far from God. God is not searching for perfect people. He is searching for genuine hearts. A genuine heart can say: “Lord, I am falling short.” “Forgive me.” “Renew my love for You.” “Help me seek You wholeheartedly.” “Give me my whole heart back to You.” The Christian life cannot be only appearance, routine, ministry, or words. Christ asks for the whole heart. Today’s prayer: Hosanna, Lord Jesus. Save me from sin, pride, distraction, temptation, and a divided heart. Give me a genuine heart that seeks You wholeheartedly.
