Modern Talking was a German based pop duo of Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders who are Germany's most successful pop duo with six #1 Albums from 1985 to 2003. The band started in 1983 and in 1987 they disbanded but reunited in 1998 with a hugely popular #1 album and then broke up again for good in 2003.
They started off doing gigs in clubs and pubs from 1983 on until they released "The First Album" in 1984 and skyrocketed to fame across Europe. "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" and "You Can Win If You Want" both hit #1 in Germany and across Europe and their #1 hit streak continued with two more singles "Cheri, Cheri Lady" from their second album and "Brother Louie" from their third album and then "Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. for Love)" gave them their fifth consecutive #1 hit.
Interest in the band slowly faded so that by the time they released their sixth LP "In the Garden Of Venus" it only reached #35 in Germany and the single peaked at #30. Frustrated with the lack of label promotion Bohlen took the lead and dissolved Modern Talking while Anders was away in Los Angeles. Incensed as not being consulted led to more animosity since it was no secret that the two quarreled incessantly in the best of times.
Bohlen blamed the break up on Anders' wife Nora who gave her husbands marching orders that included no female reporters interviewing him and constantly demanded big changes to concerts, videos and recordings. Anders later confirmed this in his biography. Bohlen formed Blue System and enjoyed several high charting radio hits. Anders continued recording and touring under the Modern Talking brand but got in contact with Bohlen once he moved back to Koblenz, Germany in 1994.
Armed with experience and production skills, the duo released "Back For Good" and it became a #1 album for five weeks and top the charts in 15 countries selling three million copies in Europe alone. They decided to break up again this time for good over Bohlen's depiction of Anders in a negative light in his autobiography released in 2003. "The Final Album" was a compilation of every single Modern Talking had issued throughout their career and it peaked at #3 on the album chart.
Anders has taken the solo route and performs regularly and Bohlen became involved with "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" (DSDS), the German version of the UK's Pop Idol.
