Terrence Gaypalani Gurruwiwi story, Part 3

Terrence talking about the bark painting and design (miny'tji), the design is from here, from Gikal', no-one else paints this design except for him. When he was younger, he used to be a naughty boy, he didn't listen to old people. He'd go walking with young boys and when old people sitting down would call out to them, he'd look at them and think that the old people were silly when they'd call them to sit down and listen to their stories. They'd walk pass and do their own things. But he came to realise that there were no short-cuts, that he wasn't following the law. His uncle would discipline him and tell him not to argue with or annoy old people. He stayed at Matamata for 1 year straight. Then he went inside secret men's business for the first time, into Nga:rra' ceremony. Inside, he received more discipline and was given responsibilities to work for the old people, he'd be given 'contracts' to fulfil. In time, he was given the duty to run Nga:rra' ceremonies, like at Milingimbi in 2008. Now he has the respect of families and people from throughout eastern Arnhem Land.
