Why does trying hard to sleep sometimes make it harder? This video walks through the lab evidence on effort, clock-watching, and what seems to help. Lying awake and calculating the hours left feels like it should motivate sleep. A few small lab studies suggest effort can interfere with something that's mostly automatic, and that watching the clock may add worry. This video covers what those studies found, how strong the evidence is, and three approaches that aim to lower effort instead of raising it. This is educational, not medical advice. If trouble sleeping lasts, please talk to a doctor.
