BOGGED on Fraser Island – HUGE recovery on Ngkala Rocks – beach fishing, catch and cook

Three run-ups at a soft sand climb with a camper on the back, and the tide closing in. Shaun Whale takes a chopped and extended 200 Series LandCruiser from Indian Head to Sandy Cape on K'gari. This is the first trip off the bitumen for Shaun Whale's brand new 200 after months in the DMW workshop getting chopped, extended and built as a full tourer, and the shakedown is Fraser Island. The convoy rolls off the Mantaray barge at Inskip Point with Sammy and Jackson from Cub Campers in Graham Cahill's D-MAX towing a camper trailer, Bryce from Fulcrum Suspensions, and Reuben from DMW Industries in a 40 Series shorty. Graham Cahill is locked out in WA and has handed over the keys, which he might live to regret. Ngkala Rocks is the gatekeeper to the top of the island and more 4WDs get bogged in that one patch of powder than just about anywhere in the country. Heading north the big 200 drags the loaded D-MAX and the Cub straight through on a snatch strap. Coming back south the entry is steeper and softer again, and it takes three goes, another snatch and a full set of MaxTrax before anything moves. Tyre pressures do the heavy lifting all trip: the D-MAX comes down from 15 psi to 10 psi, the 200 runs 18 psi, and there is a Fulcrum suspension package under it, Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tyres on Dynamic wheels, a REDARC RedVision 12V system on 200 amp hours that never drops below 80 percent, a GME XRS Connect UHF, Razorback seat covers and a 240V induction cooker running off the inverter instead of gas bottles. In between the sand there is tailor coming out of the gutters, pipis dug off the low tide flats for bait and an entree, a drone dropping baits 100 metres out the back, beer battered fish and burgers cooked in the camper's stainless kitchen, dingoes wandering through camp, Champagne Pools, Waddy Point, Lake McKenzie and a West Coast sunset camp that only 30 people a day ever see.
