DRDO is exploring a futuristic weapon for a very real battlefield problem. India’s ALH Dhruv and Rudra helicopters could be equipped with laser-based directed-energy systems to counter drone swarms. A proposed airborne laser pod would use thermal sensors, a laser rangefinder and a beam director to detect and engage unmanned targets. The advantage is cost and speed. A laser fires at the speed of light and does not use an expensive interceptor missile for every drone. DRDO has already demonstrated a 30-kilowatt ground system and is developing more powerful laser weapons. The technology could protect helicopters along the Line of Control, defend forward bases and shield convoys from surveillance or attack drones. The system is still under development and must overcome challenges involving power, cooling, dust, smoke and weather. But India is preparing its helicopters for the age of drone warfare. AXIS is where the world is explained through India’s lens. For decades, global narratives have been shaped by Western media... told through Washington, London or Beijing. But as India rises as a major economic, military and diplomatic power, why should others define the world for us? Why shouldn’t India shape its own voice, own perspective, and own narrative? That’s where AXIS comes in. We decode global power shifts, wars and conflicts, the India-China rivalry, Pakistan, West Asia, oil shocks, trade battles and neighbourhood politics - with one key question: What does this mean for India and for you? As India rises, so should its share of voice!
