#openmarriage #nonmonogamy #consent ➡️ Ninety two percent of open marriages fail. It is on law firm websites and divorce blogs, and a divorce lawyer on TikTok says he has never seen one work. So I went looking for the study. None of the pages quoting it could say where it came from. One of them, a law firm, writes "according to a recent study, 92 percent of open marriages fail", names no study, and says a few paragraphs later that open marriages probably aren't taking more than their share of divorces. The research that does exist says something more useful. Open relationships do fare worse than other kinds of non monogamy, and the gap disappears once you account for how couples communicate, and why they opened the relationship in the first place: because they wanted to, or because one of them was afraid of what would happen if they said no. Then seven stories, written by the people who lived them. The husband who stayed after an affair "only under one condition". The one who agreed to "don't ask, don't tell", then spent an hour in the bathroom on the morning of her flight. The wife who asked first, and changed the rules the month he finally used them. And the woman who was told it was open marriage or nothing, and chose nothing. 🕒 CHAPTERS 00:00 "I've never seen one work" 01:04 The 92% claim 01:36 Who repeats it 02:58 Looking for the source 05:50 What the research actually found 07:04 Why they opened it 12:19 "Only under one condition" 14:52 An hour in the bathroom 17:27 When the wife asked 20:04 "He played himself" 23:38 "I chose nothing" 26:33 The strongest objection 28:43 The ones who make it work 38:41 Who asked 📌 SOURCES People in open relationships fared worse than people in polyamorous or swinger relationships on relationship satisfaction, passionate love and trust. The differences dissipated when controlling for communication, extrinsic versus intrinsic motivations for participating, pro-monogamy beliefs, and contact with a partner's partners. Conley, T.
