🍲 Ten more farm suppers from my mother's kitchen — all of them in a slow cooker.
My name is Verna Prewitt. I'm seventy-eight, raised in the Arkansas Ozarks, and I learned every one of these watching my mother Ada work a woodstove from breakfast until dark. I've been making the same suppers in a slow cooker since about 1974. These are ten more, and not one of them repeats what I gave you before.
Every recipe is written out below with every amount and every hour — nothing to scribble down. ✍️
🔥 The three rules that run through all ten:
• Hard things go on the bottom.
• Tender things go in last.
• The lid stays shut.
⚠️ *And the ones that matter most:*
• Meat never goes in frozen.
• Ground meat to 160°F. Chicken to 165°F. Whole pork to 145°F with a short rest.
• The pot must be at least ½ and no more than ⅔ full, or it never heats right.
• If the power goes out while nobody is home, the food gets thrown out — even if it looks done.
• Leftovers to the fridge within 2 hours, and never reheated in the slow cooker.
🥄 *What's in this one:*
1️⃣ Beef tips and gravy over rice
2️⃣ Porcupine meatballs 🦔 (the rice cooks right inside them)
3️⃣ Ham, green beans and new potatoes
4️⃣ Country-style ribs
5️⃣ Chicken noodle soup
6️⃣ Sloppy joes for the ballgame crowd ⚡ (the one with the hardest rule on the list)
7️⃣ Scalloped potatoes and ham
8️⃣ Creamed chicken over biscuits
9️⃣ Rice pudding
🔟 The church kettle stew 🖤 — the black kettle in the churchyard every October
💬 Tell me down in the comments which one you're making first, and whose kitchen you first ate it in. Her name, and what part of the country she cooked in. I read every one of them, and whatever comes up the most is the one I make next.
