A Roman emperor on his knees, in chains, in a conqueror's tent — and the strangest sentence of the Middle Ages: "My punishment is far heavier. I forgive you."
This is the Great Seljuks: the steppe horsemen who served Persia's Samanid kings, destroyed the Ghaznavid army at Dandanaqan, took Baghdad, and — at Manzikert in 1071 — captured the only Roman emperor ever taken alive by a Muslim commander… and let him go. A cinematic journey from the steppe to Isfahan, ending beneath a dome you can still stand under today.
