Most knowledge workers optimize for signals they cannot control—Slack reactions, dashboard metrics, LinkedIn impressions—while ignoring the only scorecard that matters: their own.
The Stoics drew a sharp distinction between what belongs to you and what does not. Your judgment, effort, and conduct are yours. Reputation, applause, and rank are not. If someone else's mood can take it from you, it was never truly yours to begin with.
Marcus Aurelius kept his own ledger. He lived surrounded by flattery and criticism and treated both as noise. Epictetus went further: the person who needs applause has handed the key to their inner life to a stranger. Any stranger can lock the door.
The problem has become acute in the age of AI and instant feedback loops. You no longer receive judgment from someone who actually read your work. Instead, you receive machine-generated signals—counts, reactions, engagement metrics—that fire dopamine but carry no real meaning. Building your sense of a good day around these signals is building on borrowed property. It is unstable by design.
The internal scorecard is the antidote. You decide what counts as good work. You decide what counts as a good day. The world is allowed its opinion. You are not required to adopt it.
