This is the Secret Behind Secretariat’s Greatest Race At The 1973 Belmont Stakes On June 9, 1973, Secretariat faced the greatest test of his career. The Belmont Stakes was a mile and a half of unforgiving distance, a challenge that had defeated six Triple Crown hopefuls before him. And standing beside him was Sham, a brilliant rival with a strategy designed to push Big Red beyond his limits. What followed became one of the most extraordinary performances in horse racing history. As Secretariat and Sham battled through astonishing early fractions, racing experts expected both horses to run out of energy. But instead of slowing down, Secretariat found another gear. He surged ahead, leaving Sham and the rest of the field far behind in a performance that seemed to defy everything the sport understood about speed and stamina. Secretariat crossed the finish line 31 lengths ahead of the field, completing the mile and a half in an astonishing 2:24 flat, a Belmont Stakes record that has stood for more than half a century. This is the story of the afternoon when Big Red silenced the doubters, shattered expectations, and delivered a performance that continues to define greatness in American horse racing.
