This historical ballad is told from the perspective of Kitabatake Akiie. He was a court noble and important supporter of the Southern Court during the Nanboku-chō Wars.
He held the posts of Commander-in-Chief of the Defense of the North and Governor of Mutsu Province and in 1337, despite facing opposition at home in the north, Kitabatake was ordered by Emperor Go-Daigo to come to the aid of his army to the south of Kyoto.
Kitabatake led his forces slowly south, fighting the Northern Court in many battles along the way and even managed to occupy Kamakura, the capital of the Ashikaga shogunate.
From there he made his way to Nara, fighting at both Iga and Sekigahara. In Nara, while trying to rest and reorganize his forces, he was set upon by Kō no Moronao and barely escaped to Kawachi Province.
There he recouped and pushed through enemy forces at Tennōji, but eventually his army that he had led all the way from the north was defeated and spent. Staying true to the emperor he lead his last remaining men and was killed in battle at Izumi River in 1338.

Verse 1
I look up at the blue sky above
The sun shines brightly upon me
Beneath me is a soft flower bed
The sweet fragrance calms me
Chorus
We have travelled so far
From the northern shores
We came to heed the call
Now only twenty remain
Verse 2
My thoughts go to my loving wife
And our son resting in her embrace
I wish I had more time with them
But my path has come to its end
Chorus
We have travelled so far
From the northern shores
We came to heed the call
Now only twenty remain
Verse 3
I mount my horse once more
Turn to my men with a smile
We have fought many battles
Now we make our last stand
Chorus
We have travelled so far
From the northern shores
We came to heed the call
Now only twenty remain
Verse 4
Surrounded and outnumbered
We recite poems, say our farewells
Then charge forward into history
And fall like petals upon the wind
Final Chorus
We have travelled so far
From the northern shores
We came to heed the call
Now none of us remain
