Practice assigning R and S the way exams ask: name a molecule from its structure, and draw a structure from its name.
New to the right-hand rule or the single swap rule? Watch the full lesson first:
[PASTE LINK: Stereochemistry: Right-Hand Rule and Single Swap Rule]
What you will practice:
Ranking groups by CIP priority, including ties broken one atom further out
Finding the hidden hydrogen: it points the opposite way from the wedge or dash
Right-hand rule: thumb toward priority group 4, curl from group 1. 1-2-3 is R, 1-3-2 is S
Single swap rule: swapping any two groups flips R and S
Writing R/S in a name: (R)-3-chloro-2-methylpentane, (1R,3S)-1-bromo-3-ethylcyclohexane
Drawing from a name two ways: guess-and-check, or the faster trace method (clockwise puts group 4 on the dash)
Problems:
1. Name it: (R)-3-chloro-2-methylpentane
2. Draw it: (1R,3S)-1-bromo-3-ethylcyclohexane
3. Your turn: (2R,3S)-2-bromo-3-methylpentane
