Today I'm painting a simple impressionist Autumn berries hedgerow scene with bright red berries as the focus, and loose abstract effects to suggest autumn foliage, leaves etc. I'm using a limited palette of quin gold, sap green, perylene green, alizarin crimson and French vermilion and a touch of burnt sienna.
First I use masking fluid to mask out a few stems and the berries, then I painted an abstract, free-flowing wet in wet background, aiming to keep it fresh, loosely painted and kept really simple, and darker behind the berries to show off the tree shapes. While I mention hawthorn berries in the demo, in hindsight, they look more like rowan berries!
I'm using Millford 100% cotton hot press 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video, but use whichever brushes you have.
