What is a manticore? Ancient writers described a man-eating creature with a human face, a lion’s body, three rows of teeth, and a tail that fired spines like arrows. The Greek physician Ctesias claimed he saw one at the Persian court. Later, Pausanias suggested that the creature behind the story was a tiger. Follow the legend through ancient accounts, medieval bestiaries, Edward Topsell’s 1607 woodcut, and the winged manticore of modern fantasy. The episode combines historical illustrations with cinematic reconstructions of the legend. 00:00 The monster with a human face 00:24 The tail that fired spines 01:24 Hunting a manticore from an elephant 02:17 The physician who claimed to see it 03:22 Could the manticore have been a tiger? 04:16 The beast in medieval books and stone 05:11 Topsell’s manticore and the porcupine myth 06:17 When the manticore gained wings 07:01 What survives of the ancient account 07:46 Watch next — Gargoyles Which detail would have made the story hardest to believe: the human face, the flying spines, or the supposed sighting at court?
