Why Switzerland Is Full of Millionaires
The average adult in Switzerland is worth about $910,000, the highest figure on Earth, and more than one in eight residents is a dollar millionaire. Yet this is a landlocked rock with no sea, no oil and no gold mines, a country so poor for centuries that its biggest export was its own young men, hired out to fight other people's wars.
So how did it become the richest place in the world? Switzerland doesn't really sell watches, medicine or banking. It sells something much harder to make: the promise that tomorrow will look exactly like today. Neutrality, bank vaults, luxury watches, gold refineries, commodity traders and a nuclear bunker for every resident all come back to one product, the absence of surprise.
