Autumn 1910. A father, a mother and their little boy cross the pine forests of Masuria by horse wagon, carrying everything they own to a new home and a new job at the sawmill — until a thunderstorm turns the forest track into a muddy stream, a lightning-struck pine falls across the road, and their wagon sinks to its axle in the mud.
Then, through the rain, comes a lamp. An old woodcutter and his wife take them into their lonely log cottage by the lake — where the roof leaks drop by drop into a tin basin, all the firewood is wet, and the stove has been cold for days. So the family repays their rescue the only way they know: with work, with dry wood, and with the stores from their own wagon.
The old man takes down his carved-handled axe and hands it to the father, and the fallen pine that blocked their road turns out to hold dry golden wood at its heart. Together they mend the roof and patch the old man's leaking boat — and when the rising lake threatens the flour and seed in the storehouse across the bay, the parents row out through the rain to save them, the mother slipping on the wet landing as the father catches her hand.
At the end of the night the father wipes the axe clean and hangs it back on its hook by the door, and the whole house falls asleep in a row beside the warm stove, rain falling softly on the mended roof.
