Sawmill Camp in the Tallahatchie Bottoms — a long summer night in 1936 at a cypress sawmill camp deep in the Tallahatchie River bottoms of Mississippi, where the mill hands rest in boxcar shanties by lantern light, the boiler fire is banked, the mules stamp in the log pen and a sawdust pile smoulders in the dark until the mill whistle blows at dawn. The log road into the bottoms, boxcar shanties on the spur, banking the boiler fire, the big saw standing still, cypress logs in the mill pond, mules stamping in the log pen, company scrip in a tobacco tin, the sawdust pile smoking in the dark, filing saw teeth by lantern, a panther scream in the canebrake, a dinner bucket on a nail, the walking boss with a carbide lamp, dice on a plank table, the man who lost three fingers, river fog through the tupelo gums, the dinky engine cooling on the spur, a letter home from the mill camp, heat lightning over the bottoms — and the mill whistle at daybreak, with the bottomland camp quiet again by morning. The set plays through twice, so put it on and leave it running. No talking, no ads inside the mix, no interruptions. Solo bottleneck slide guitar, foot-stomp on the boards, upright bass, low cross-harp and night insects. No singing.
