[Tokyo Katsushika] 750th Anniversary Grand Festival! Kameari Katori Shrine: Home of 'KochiKame' & 18-Neighborhood Mikoshi Finale!🔥 Experience the most electric festival in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward at Kameari Katori Shrine! The town of Kameari is globally renowned as the real-world setting of the legendary manga and anime series Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo (widely known as KochiKame, starring the iconic officer Ryotsu Kankichi). The year 2026 marks the shrine's monumental 750th Anniversary Grand Festival. To commemorate this milestone, the shrine's sacred and massive Miya-Mikoshi (main shrine portable shrine) took to the streets, hoisted in harmony and passed along by all 18 local neighborhood associations! For the grand finale, the procession departed from Kameari Station, with carriers from each of the 18 districts rotating on the poles as they carried the sacred shrine back into the grounds for a roaring, emotional "Miyairi" return ceremony. Held annually during the second weekend of October, this full Miya-Mikoshi procession takes place once every two years (even on alternating years, the combined neighborhood procession draws massive, enthusiastic crowds). Enjoy the authentic downtown spirit, vibrant unity, and rich pop-culture history that makes Kameari truly special! This presentation introduces traditional Japanese festivals, focusing primarily on the mikoshi (portable shrine). These shrines carry a deity through the local community—specifically, the area served by the shrine, known as the ujiko territory, which varies for each shrine. Mikoshi come in various sizes, and the methods of carrying them and the accompanying chants differ as well. If any of the festivals in the video catch your eye, we encourage you to visit Japan and experience them in person.
