Amos 5:25-Have you offered my sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness 40 years? They did offer sacrifices and offerings; but no always to God. In Exodus 20:5, “For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God…” and in Exodus 34:14, “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” God is intolerant to competing worship. He will not tolerate it. Here God tells Israel, you have borne these statues and false gods and carried them from place-to-place while I guided you with real cloud by day and real fire by night. God will not abide mixed worship—worship of Him and use of other deities or ‘tools’ of worship. I am reminded of a scripture where the ark of God was captured by the Philistines and they placed it into the temple of Dagon. God caused the statue of Dagon to fall face down in the dirt before the ark of God. Upon discovery the Philistines placed daon back on his pedestal. The next day dagon was found with severed head and hands face down in the dirt. God has no equal and He showed this in this instance. Our God is not just another God among many. He is God. King of kings and Lord of lords. Amen. Verse 27—God again pronounces judgement and tells Israel they will go into captivity beyond Damascus. That is exactly what happened. Israel was taken into captivity.
