The Arpeggione Sonata was originally composed for the now-extinct arpeggione, a 6-stringed, fretted, bowed guitar-like instrument, invented in 1823. Schubert's sonata is the only significant composition for this instrument, which enjoyed a brief period of popularity in the 19th century.
