For seven years, one client account was mine. Never on paper. The emails went out after ten at night from my own address, and nobody upstairs ever asked why. I asked my chief exactly once to put the work in writing. He laughed. "Don't make this complicated. Just keep quietly helping out. That's enough." Then he said the part he repeated to everyone: even without me, he could handle that client himself just fine. So I handed in my resignation. One envelope, and not a single page of handover notes — because there was nothing to hand over. Seven years of pricing, delivery schedules and every promise made at two in the morning lived in one place only, and my contract ended that day. Three weeks later, at the annual meeting, the client asked the one question that emptied the room: "Is the person who handled this until last year here today?" I never said a word against him. I only stopped doing for free what nobody had ever written down. What came after wasn't revenge. It was seven years of timestamps that HR pulled out of my work email, every one of them after ten at night, and a question nobody in that building wanted answered: who told him to do it that way? And the promise I was really keeping was made at a farewell party, by the only man who ever called me by my name instead of "the contract worker." He told me, years too late, that I never had to keep it at all. ▶ If a boss has ever taken your work and called it his own, stay to the end. Subscribe for a new revenge & romance Manga Dub every week.
