In 1956 an IKEA designer took the legs off a table so it would fit in his car — and flat-pack became the company's defining idea. This episode explains why the flat box matters far more than the furniture inside it: it cuts shipping and storage costs, and more importantly it turns the customer into the last worker on the line, finding, carrying, transporting and assembling the product unpaid. We look at the walk-through warehouse, designing backward from the price, the IKEA effect, the loop between low prices and enormous scale, where the model strains, and the same trick in self-checkouts and everywhere else.
