Two nine-year-old brothers walked into the timber above Sleet Hollow, North Carolina, on 3 February 1898. Their tracks ran a mile and a quarter uphill through fresh snow and then stopped in the middle of thirty yards of clean, undisturbed ground. Nineteen days later they were found sitting on a log, unhurt, well fed, and without a single mark of frostbite. Neither of them ever spoke again. What they did instead was cut. The same shape, over and over, into every wooden surface they could reach — first the house, then the schoolroom, then fifty-two years of a state asylum ward. It was painted over four times. It came back every time. In 1919, four superintendents in four different states began writing to each other about a mark they had each seen on patients who had gone missing and been found. Their file was called in by a state office in 1931. It has never been located. The ward came down in 1961, five months after an inspection. The report survives. Its sixteen photographic plates do not. Subscribe — a case like this every week. The ones that were closed too quickly, and the ones where somebody clearly did not want anything left to look at. #appalachia #unsolved #truestory #history #mystery
