Who Really Invented the Telephone? | Bell, Gray, Meucci, and the Patent Race Who really invented the telephone? Alexander Graham Bell won the patent in 1876, but the story is far messier than the textbooks say. Elisha Gray filed a notice of a similar invention on the same day. An Italian immigrant named Antonio Meucci said he had built a working system years earlier, but couldn’t afford a $10 renewal fee. And Thomas Edison’s microphone made the phone loud enough to use. In this video, we follow the whole race and look at what historians still argue about. in this video: The patent office on February 14, 1876 The twang that gave Bell his idea Bourseul and Reis, the earlier dreamers Antonio Meucci and the $10 fee The Bell and Gray controversy, and what the notebooks show How Edison’s microphone made the phone practical The first exchange, “hello” versus “ahoy,” and the first women operators The legal battles and the 2002 resolution honoring Meucci SOURCES AND FURTHER READING Bruce, R.
