💧Two Years of Waiting… Fifteen Ponds Finally Filled

After two years of waiting, the flood we built this system for finally came. A huge arroyo flood swept through our Southeast Colorado ranch and, for the first time, filled all 15 ponds in our water catchment system. For two years, I’ve been waiting to see what would happen when a big flood moved through the entire system. Would the check dams slow the water down? Would the ponds fill in sequence? Would the water soak into the ground like we hoped? And just as importantly—what would fail? In this video, we tour all 15 ponds and see what worked, what didn’t, and what we learned from watching a real flood put the entire system to the test. The goal of this project is simple: slow down fast-moving arroyo water, spread it across the landscape, and give more of that water time to soak into the ground and recharge our groundwater. This is water harvesting on a real working ranch in dry Southeast Colorado—and now we finally get to see what two years of work can do when the big water arrives.
