MOMENTS IN TORAH | BERESHIT — IN THE BEGINNINGTorah Portion: Genesis 1:1–6:8 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 What happens when the Creator brings order out of chaos, forms humanity in His image, and establishes His divine order for life? Join us for Bereshit (בְּרֵאשִׁית), the opening Torah portion, as we journey back to the beginning and explore the foundations of creation, humanity, sin, and redemption. In this cinematic retelling from Moments in Torah, we revisit the breathtaking account of creation, the beauty of the Garden of Eden, the temptation that changed humanity’s story, and the consequences of disobedience. We witness the tragic conflict between Cain and Abel, trace the generations of early humanity, and see the growing corruption that sets the stage for the story of Noah. Yet even in the midst of humanity’s failure, the story points us toward the faithfulness of God and His unfolding redemptive purpose. IN THIS TORAH PORTION Creation: God brings order, purpose, and life into existence. The Garden of Eden: Humanity receives a divine calling and responsibility. The Fall: Temptation, disobedience, and the consequences of sin enter the human story. Cain and Abel: Jealousy, anger, and the tragedy of the first murder. The Generations of Humanity: The growth of civilization and the spread of corruption. The Days of Noah Approach: Humanity’s wickedness increases as the narrative moves toward the next chapter of Genesis. THE MESSAGE OF BERESHIT God brings order out of chaos, but humanity must learn to live within His order. Bereshit invites us to consider our identity as people created in the image of God, our responsibility for the choices we make, and the consequences of turning away from His instructions. It reminds us that our story begins with the Creator—and that understanding the beginning helps us better understand the rest of Scripture. SCRIPTURE READINGS Torah: Genesis 1:1–6:8 Haftarah: Isaiah 42:5–43:10 Brit Hadashah (New Testament): John 1:1–18; Revelation 22:6–21 REFLECT AND APPLY What does creation teach us about the character and authority of God? What can the Garden of Eden teach us about obedience and responsibility? How can we recognize temptation before it leads us away from God's instructions?
