Under the clear water of Lake Malawi lives a kingdom of brightly coloured fish found nowhere else on Earth, and at dusk the lake sends billions of insects into the sky.
This documentary follows fourteen hours on the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, one of the great lakes of Africa's Rift Valley, shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. The lake holds more species of fish than any other lake in the world, and most of them are cichlids that evolved here and live nowhere else.
On the sunlit boulders, rock-dwelling Mbuna cichlids scrape algae and defend tiny territories, while Peacock Cichlids sift the sand for food. The Sleeper Cichlid lies on its side on the sand like a dead fish, then strikes when smaller fish come close. Above the water, the African Fish Eagle and the kingfishers hunt the shallows, and Spotted-necked Otters chase fish and crabs through the cracks between the rocks. Hippos and Nile Crocodiles hold the shoreline through the heat of the day.
As the light goes, the night shift takes over. The large Kampango Catfish leaves its cave and the cichlids wedge themselves into the rocks. Then the lake flies emerge from the water by the billions, rising in dense swarms that from the shore look like columns of smoke over the lake.
Filmed as a continuous day cycle, from the mist on the boulders at dawn to the lake fly swarms at dusk.
