In this video, buses at Rotterdam Zuidplein in 2025 are shown, not forgetting to mention what has changed in 2026 compared to 2025:
New contract for Connexxion (Transdev), with mainly R-net lines operating to Zuidplein from Heinenoord and other cities/villages in the area south of Rotterdam.
There are only VDL Citea LE-122s and Volvo/MCV 7900Es left. The biggest variety has unfortunately disappeared.
Rotterdam Zuidplein is together with Utrecht Centraal, one of the biggest bus stations in the Netherlands, with 16 million passengers using the bus and metro network yearly for school, work and more. Around 2,000 buses depart from and arrive at Zuidplein, with the operators being RET, which operates most of the lines, of course, as it is the main public transport operator in Rotterdam and the neighbouring districts. Connexxion (Transdev), connecting the city with Hoeksche Waard and Goeree-Overflakkee, and Qbuzz, connecting the city with the Drechtsteden and Dordrecht. Lastly, Arriva operates only one line, line 360, going to Bergen op Zoom, which is also the longest service, taking over an hour!
The variety of bus models has changed drastically!
Since the 6th of July 2026, Arriva no longer uses its 8900-series VDL Citea LLE-120s and Volvo 8900 LEs, and since July 2026, even the 0900-series VDL Citea LLE-120s have disappeared, leaving only the VDL Citea LE-135 in operation.
Since the 14th of December 2025, Connexxion (Transdev)'s contract has ended, but because they were chosen again, the operator continues to operate, now with a modernised fleet. The new buses arrived late, leading to the contractor's VDL Citea XLEs and various Mercedes-Benz Citaros operating at Zuidplein on a variety of lines. However, lines 160, 166, 174, etc., no longer operate, of course. Only lines 436, 461, 462 and 471 remain, but they have a high frequency. In March, all the old buses were retired, although some of them continued operating for TCR/BusiNext, a company that Connexxion lent its buses to.
Qbuzz and RET have barely changed, with RET only retiring its 300-series Citaros after an impressive 18 years of service. Unfortunately, this doesn't just affect Zuidplein, but the entirety of Rotterdam.
I really recommend spotting here if you want to see a lot of public transport, with at least one bus passing by every half minute during peak hours. However, as I mentioned earlier, the variety has decreased.
