What did Earth actually look like when ancient humans were alive? Not the planet we know today — but a wilder world filled with giant animals, darker skies, richer ecosystems, and landscapes that no longer exist. This video reconstructs the sensory reality of prehistoric Earth. During the African Humid Period, parts of today’s Sahara supported grasslands, rivers, lakes, hippos, and human communities. During glacial periods, sea levels were lower, exposing land bridges and huge areas of terrain now underwater. The animals were even more dramatic: cave lions and cave bears in Europe, mammoths and giant ground sloths in the Americas, Diprotodon and giant monitor lizards in Australia. Many of these megafauna disappeared as climates shifted and humans spread, though the exact role of hunting versus environmental change remains debated. Ancient nights were also radically different — no artificial light, far more visible stars, and skies used as calendars and navigation systems. Oceans, rivers, forests, and migration routes were packed with life on scales difficult to imagine today.
