He was the firstborn son, named after his father, and he was supposed to inherit everything. Instead, Fred Trump Jr. died of a heart attack linked to his alcoholism on September 26, 1981. He was forty-two. Freddy did not want the family business. At Lehigh University he was the fraternity president who rented planes for fun. In the early 1960s he became a pilot for TWA, married a flight attendant named Linda Clapp, and had two children, Fred III and Mary. His father reportedly dismissed it as being "a chauffeur in the sky." And Donald, by his own later admission, pressured him to give it up. The drinking got worse, the flying ended, and Freddy went back to work in his father's buildings in Queens. Years after his death, his children were left a small share of Fred Trump Sr.'s estate and went to court over it. In 2019, Donald Trump told The Washington Post: "I do regret having put pressure on him." In 2020, Freddy's daughter, the psychologist Mary L. Trump, published her account of the family, Too Much and Never Enough. Her uncle Robert went to court to try to stop it, and failed. The book sold about 950,000 copies on its first day. This is a story about two brothers and a father, not about politics. Every judgment about the family's psychology in this video is Mary Trump's, and it is attributed to her. Donald Trump's own words are quoted as he said them. Sources: The Washington Post: Trump pressured his alcoholic brother about his career.
