Hi All - In this video, we're on the road providing an inside look at a 60-Foot Radio Telescope in eastern Colorado! The Deep Space Exploration Society (DSES) operates a historic 60-foot radio telescope near Haswell, Colorado. The antenna and surrounding site trace their origins to the Cold War, when the facility was established by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards—now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)—for radio propagation research. During the late 1950s and 1960s, the site was used to study microwave tropospheric scatter and over-the-horizon communications in support of long-distance communications associated with the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, the network built across the Arctic to provide early warning of a potential Soviet bomber attack. The Haswell facility later participated in satellite communications research before the government decommissioned the site in the 1970s. Today, DSES has given this remarkable piece of Cold War-era technology an entirely new purpose. The restored 60-foot dish is used for radio astronomy, pulsar and neutral-hydrogen observations, amateur radio experimentation, Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) communications, and other space-related research and educational projects. It's a fascinating example of technology evolving from Cold War communications research to exploring the cosmos.
