Trafalgar is a town in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. The town lies on the Princes Highway and the main Gippsland railway line, about 125 km (78 miles) south-east of Melbourne, the state capital. It backs onto the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges to the south. The town is named in honour of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805, which established the Royal Navy's supremacy at sea, enabling the consolidation of Britain's Australian colonies at the time. Several streets in the town are also named after British military history. Trafalgar Post Office opened on 2 June 1879. Trafalgar was noted for having a cheese factory producing award-winning cheeses. The factory was owned by Petersville from 1960 until its closure in 1990. The town has a railway station on the Bairnsdale railway line. Trafalgar Railway Station, which opened on 1 August 1878, is an unstaffed ground-level station on the Gippsland line, serving the town of Trafalgar. Located on the Princes Highway, it provides hourly V/Line passenger services between Melbourne and Traralgon, with some services extending to Bairnsdale. In 1955, electrification of the line was extended from Warragul to Moe, passing through the station. In 1958, the line from Yarragon was duplicated, including a new down platform (Platform 2), a new signal panel, and flashing light signals at the Ashby Street level crossing, situated nearby in the up direction of the station. In 1960, the line between Trafalgar and Moe was duplicated. On 2 July 1987, electrification between Warragul and Traralgon ceased. In 1996, a footbridge at the station, located at the up end, was closed and replaced with a pedestrian crossing. In 1997, boom barriers were installed at the Ashby Street level crossing. A disused goods shed and platform formerly existed behind Platform 2; however, these were removed in 2004 by the current landowners, Reid Stockfeeds. On 28 April 2006, the signal panel was abolished.
