SITUATION: The butt connection shows bolts spaced as follows:
S1 = 40 mm, S2 = 80 mm, S3 = 50 mm, S4 = 100 mm
t1 = 16 mm, t2 = 12 mm
Steel strength and stresses are:
Yield strength, Fy = 248 MPa
Ultimate strength, Fy = 400 MPa
Allowable tensile stress on gross area = 0.60Fy
Allowable tensile stress on net area = 0.50Fu
Allowable bolt shear stress = 120 MPa
Allowable bearing stress, Fp = 240 MPa
Bolt hole diameter = D + 3 mm
Tensile force, T = 352 kN
1. Determine the diameter (mm) of bolt due to shear stress of bolt.
